The Institute of Medicine (IOM) reports are at the center of the current restructuring of healthcare systems and the movement toward inter-professional work, and they influence funding from research, education, and health policy agencies and professional organizations. Again built around IOM’s five core competencies for health professions education— providing patient-centered care; working on interdisciplinary teams; employing evidence-based practice; applying quality improvement; and using informatics—this publication contains what nursing students need to know from a practice perspective about patient safety and quality of care and their own professional growth. This is an invaluable, indispensable resource for those who teach nursing students at any level, and for staff nurses and administrators.
The book continues with the same format as the first edition but almost doubles the content. It now describes 20 key IOM reports (though 2009) relevance to nursing. The authors have also expanded the content on clinical implications and general nursing education issues; the five healthcare core competencies that frame the teaching-learning strategies have been expanded with more content and examples. Also new in the second edition is a list of abbreviations and a glossary.
The companion instructional files have also been revised, with new instructional material added, such as an extensive annotated Internet link resource, and the examination questions for ease of use by educators. These files will be available for download after purchase of the eBook.
